HELLO's from all languages are needed for a display I am making.
Would you please write HELLO in your language, or any/all
languages you know, and send them on to me.
A simple text file is great. Or, if you use a writing system
that is not based on Latin characters, a black & white image file
would be super (ie. a card from HyperCard, screen snapshot, PICT,
TIFF, etc.), using a font size >35 points to ensure a good
resolution.
Please don't forget to mention the language you are using, and if
possible, a pronunciation guide in English. All HELLO's will be
compiled into one PICT file, and sent back to the site for everyone's

Subject: 650 meg MO drives ?
Hi,
I am contemplating getting a 650 meg Magneto-Optical drive.
MacWorld had some tests in Nov 92, but since then other drives
have come out and I was wondering how they compare to each
other speedwise.
I am particularly interested in the Microtech Genesis 650
which can be gotten for around 1800$.
I have also seen Ricoh Hyperdrives for as low as 1999$, those
might be a bit faster (at least according to given access time 27ms).
The cheapest price I have found for the very fast 650 Pinacle is
around 2500$.
So, what kind of experience do people have with these drives.
Is the price difference from a Microtech to a Pinnacle worth it,
given that the Microtech is probably slower? (but how much slower?).
Any help would be appreciated (preferably by email).
Thanks

Does anyone know of an A/UX 3.0 (-compatible) program that can change

I saw recently some discussion on flopticals and backing up and I thought I
would share my experiences. Last January, we bought a floptical and it has
turned out to be a great investment. We have very valuable data sitting
on our drives, so we backup often (oh, to back up to floptical with Norton
Backup, simply choose Macintosh File, rather than 1.44 MB floppy, all works
the same). Last week our hard drive crashed, and we were able to recover
practically everything from four flopticals. I guess the moral is that
backing up is good, flopticals are very stable as compared to SyQuest and
Bernoulli, and for the price, you can't beat it!

I disagree; I would suggest you are overstating the case seriously.
Yes, I agree the FP4 is less reliable than the FP5, or other newer
routers;
HOWEVER I have been running 40+ of them on a large network for some
time, with the only problems being a certain tendency to lose
settings
when we lose power suddenly.
Your problem was almost certainly caused by conflicting router
settings, and has nothing to do with the FP4 per se; your original
message indicates that the internals of router configuration are not
your usual area, so... [I have not seen the other replies, so I can't
follow the details of your logic]
And I would add a caution about relying on Novell for Macintosh
networking; yes it may work today but their commitment to long term
support and so on has a wishy-washy track record. Macs are definately
number two or lower on their list.

---------------------------Original message----------------------------
Akimbo Systems
11 Rose Street
Somerville, Mass 02143

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Akimbo Systems Acquires
FullWrite Professional Word Processor and
Announces Support & Upgrade Plans
(July 19, 1993, SOMERVILLE, MA) ... Akimbo Systems announced
today that it has acquired rights to the FullWrite Professional
word processor from Borland International, Inc. Effective
immediately, Akimbo Systems assumes upgrade, support, and
maintenance responsibilities for FullWrite.
"We're very pleased that we were able to acquire FullWrite,"
said Kelly Moutsos, FullWrite product manager at Akimbo Systems.
"As one of the most powerful word processors available for the
Macintosh, FullWrite has always had a dedicated following. As a
Macintosh-only developer, we can concentrate upon giving this
product a great upgrade."
"An upgrade would make many users very happy," according to
Neil J. Salkind, author of Que's award-winning Big Mac Book.
"Users of FullWrite have been asking for an upgrade for a long
time. FullWrite is already a first-class word processor; a solid
upgrade will make it even more attractive."
Gene Thomas, manager of AIS Computers in Savannah, Georgia,
applauds the acquisition. "The return of FullWrite allows business
people, academics, and writers to achieve quality finished product
without sacrificing what brought most of us to the Macintosh in
the first place. It will be the recommended professional writing
tool in our store."
FullWrite is a powerful, easy-to-use word processor with some
desktop publishing features. The package includes a fully
integrated outliner as well as a complete graphics environment.
FullWrite is suitable for an extensive range of documents - from
simple, one-page memos to business reports to entire books.
Major Upgrade Planned for Q1 1994 Shipment
Work is already in progress on a major software upgrade, to
be called FullWrite 2, according to Moutsos. "We're proceeding
aggressively, well aware that our users have anticipated an
upgrade for some time." FullWrite 2 is scheduled to ship in the
first quarter of 1994.
The key features of FullWrite 2 include: Full Macintosh
System 7 support, including Balloon Help, Publish/Subscribe, and
Apple Events (the core set plus over 250 others); an improved
interface which is more accessible and friendlier to beginning as
well as advanced users; improved import and export functionality,
allowing users to convert files to and from other word processor
programs; and color support, including on-screen color pictures.
FullWrite 1.5s, the current version, runs on any Macintosh
system having 2MB of memory or more under System 6, or 4MB of
memory or more under System 7; 1MB of hard disk space is required
(3MB is recommended). These specs are anticipated to remain the
same for the upgraded product.
Customer Support for FullWrite
Akimbo Systems has established a support forum on America
Online along with E-mail addresses designated for users of
FullWrite. Members of America Online can use the keyword
FullWrite to access the forum, which is located in the Macintosh
Desktop Publishing area. Additionally, users may send technical
support and general questions to FullWrite@AOL.COM. Users also
may send or fax written requests concerning technical support
questions or suggestions.
The other E-mail address, FullIdeas@AOL.COM, is for people
who want to contribute ideas, suggestions, and wish lists for the
next release of FullWrite.
Akimbo Systems has selected Software Support, Inc., of
Heathrow, Florida, specialists in end-user customer support, as
the provider of fee-based phone support. Software Support
staffers are trained to answer a wide range of questions about
FullWrite. Several support plans are available. Users can call
Software Support at 800-756-4463, Monday through Friday between
8:30-5:00 EST.
Ordering Information
FullWrite 2 will be priced at $395. Pricing for the upgrade
will be announced shortly. Registered users will be sent notice
of the upgrade; those users who have not yet registered their
copies of FullWrite should send their registration cards to Akimbo
Systems, 11 Rose Street, Somerville, MA 02143. First-time

Subject: Hypercard Font Problem (TY)
I recently posted a question regarding a problem that Type-1 fonts were
causing with an old Hypercard stack I had created. Most of the fields had
the text displayed inappropriately and some of the text in the field was
clipped off. I was distributing the disk to students who ended up using
them with a variety of CPUs and Systems, so some would encounter it while
others wouldn't.
I received several suggestions and wish to thank: Conrad H. Gempf, Matt
Neuburg, James Prescott and Richard Rathe.
A special thanks to Conrad who provide a very detailed description of a
solution that worked wonderfully. Essentially it amounts to installing the
old fonts directly into the stack by using the Font-DA mover and holding
down the option key to open the stack. Worked like a charm. This adds to
the size of the stack, but minimally!
Many Thanks!! I am very appreciative of the help that is so readily
avialable from Info-Mac subscribers.

Subject: Info about the Apple Newton MessagePad
(I know this isn't exactly Macintosh-oriented information, but I think
it'll be of interest to a lot of the people who read this newsgroup.)
Motivated by curiosity about what this much-hyped Newton will be, I've
done a little research. Here's the information I've gathered from
various sources, primarily MacWeek and comp.sys.pen. (Caveat lector,
as usual: just because it's here doesn't mean it's true. I don't have
any 'inside information' about the Newton, so there will be errors here.)
-------
The Apple Newton MessagePad Communications Assistant.
Due to be released on August 2, the day before the Macworld Expo in Boston.
Available in three configurations:
- Base model, no modem. $700 suggested retail price.
- With external 2400 baud modem (which can send faxes). $800 SRP.
- Bundle with Newton, modem, "Newton Connection Pro" (kit with software
& cable for sharing data between the Newton and a Mac or Windows
desktop or notebook computer). $900 SRP.
(note that those prices are VERY ROUGH and will probably be
considerably lower on the street! I'd guess $500-$700.)
Palm-sized, 16 ounces, 7.5"x4.5"x.75". Screen is a little under 4x3
inches, touch-sensitive LCD, 336x240 tall. It comes with two plastic
styluses (the second is a spare in case you lose the first), but you
can use any blunt tip on the screen, including your finger. Screen
LCD is by Sharp. Not backlit.
Comes with four built-in applications: a notepad, a to-do list, a name
file, and a datebook. These are very similar to HyperCard stacks. The
Newton will not use the same "desktop" paradigm as the Macintosh. No
dictionary or thesaurus are included. A system password protects your data.
Text entry is freeform (you don't have to write in squares like on
some other PDA's), and handwriting recognition has been reported to be
passable, but not perfect.
PCMCIA cards (memory, modems, etc.) can be added for expansion.
The Newton has one PCMCIA 2.0 Type II slot.
PCMCIA Cards planned by Apple:
- 1Mb memory expansion card, under $200.
- 2Mb memory expansion card, about $250.
- Messaging Card (Motorola-built wireless communications card that lets it
act as a beeper and receive email), about $250.
PCMCIA, in case you couldn't figure it out, stands for "People Can't
Make Clear, Intuitive Acronyms." (not!)
Hardware specs on the MessagePad:
640k RAM, of which 192k is for user data (enough for several hundred
items of the info the Newton is designed for -- names/addresses, brief
notes, calendar entries -- with room left over for several dozen sketches).
32-bit ARM 610 RISC processor @ 20MHz.
4Mb ROM (twice as big as those in the high-end 660av and 840av Macs).
Infrared interface (like the one on a TV remote control) that lets two
Newtons (pointed at each other no more than 3 feet apart) exchange data.
Serial LocalTalk RS-422 port (similar to the GeoPort in the 660av and
840av) that lets the Newton connect to an external faxmodem, Mac or
Windows systems, a StyleWriter, or (via an AppleTalk network) a LaserWriter.
Batteries: four alkaline AA (AAA?) batteries, which can last for
several days of use. AC adapter & backup battery are included.
Built-in lithium cell so memory isn't lost when changing batteries.
The Newton probably does not include a built-in battery charger like
the Powerbooks.
No cover for screen (like early prototypes had), but slipcase is included.
Leather slip case can be purchased separately.
Includes speaker (which isn't used for much), headphone jack, and
volume control. No microphone. Some prototypes had a speaker at the
top and a microphone at the bottom, like a telephone handset -- hmmmmm!
4 more models (including heavy-duty "Brutus") could be released over
the next 6 months.
For a recorded Newton ad, call 800-7-NEWTON. (800-763-9866)
(I called it. It's very cute. They even refer to "making a
boo-boo" at one point.)

Subject: My Gripe With SCSI
Not that I've been losing sleep over this, it just bugs me. Why is it that
whenever you buy an external SCSI device, you get a Mac to SCSI cable with
it?
Then, if you buy a second SCSI device, you get another useless Mac to SCSI
cable. And, every subsequent SCSI device comes with an equally useless
cable.
They're smart, though. Without the addition of other SCSI ports or extenders,
you cannot have more than 7 useless Mac to SCSI cables(*).
Isn't the purpose of SCSI to be daisy chainable? Why then isn't the Mac to
SCSI cable the same as a SCSI to SCSI cable or why don't you have the option
of getting a new hard drive, CD ROM, SyQuest, etc. with either cable? And,
why can't I find any of my numerous Mac to SCSI cables that I'm complaining
about?
Boy, this should make the 6 o'clock news!

one of which uses a Mac to SCSI cable. Milage shouldn't vary, but if it does,

Fixing (or marking out) bad blocks is normally the duty of the
formatting software which comes with the hard drive (such as a Syquest
hard drive).
I've recently had an adventure with Mirror's "Media Manager" hard
drive formatting software that came with my RM88 (Syquest 5110), and I
thought I'd post my situation to the net. Sympathetic e-mail is
appreciated.
Recently, one of my 88MB Syquest carts gave up the ghost. I couldn't
write any new data to the cart, but I could read the data OK. I backed
it up and decided to attack it with the Media Manager software.
I read the manual first; it seemed sensible to try and "Erase/Format"
the disk for starters. No dice; after several starts and stops, the
erased disk had the same problem as the unerased version: attempts to
write to it resulted in errors.
Attack 2: Use the "Test Drive" feature to isolate bad sectors and
format around them. I tested the drive (a 100 minute process), and
checked the "defect list". Sure enough, the test detected about 28 bad
sectors out of about 173000. Not bad, but enough to cripple the cart I
suppose.
Following the manual, I then "Erase/Format"ted the drive again, firm
in my belief that the program would format around the bad sectors and
mark them off. It didn't work! In fact, the disk was still getting
write errors!
What could be wrong? Fortunately, the Mirror driver records errors and
stores them on the drive; using the Media Manager software I was able
to examine this "Error Log". _Most of the sectors in the error log
were also on the defect list I had generated earlier._ This was a
major surprise, since the Media Manager software was supposed to
format around those bad blocks and mark them, so the Mac was never
supposed to write to them!
The only conclusion was that the Media Manager software was, in fact,
ignoring the defect list entirely, and it was leaving the bad sectors
accessible. This behavior is in direct contradiction to the
information in the manual.
Attack 3: Throw out the Media Manager software, which was clearly
defective. I used the information in the file
/mac/misc/documentation/modifyinghdscsetup.txt on
mac.archive.umich.edu to modify my Apple HD SC Setup program to work
with non-Apple drives. The initialization process took about 2 hours
for each cartridge, but it worked. It apparently successfully isolated
the bad sectors, and the disk was just fine.
It behaves a bit strangely for a Syquest cart (since the Apple HD SC
software doesn't know what a removable hard drive is :-), but it's
better than no cartridge at all. SCSIProbe's auto-mounting init makes
up for the strange behavior by providing automatic mounting and clean
ejection capabilities.
Well, that's the story. BTW, I dragged Mirror tech support into this
at one point, and I have to say that the experience was extremely
un-edifying. The Mirror support person knew virtually nothing about
the SQ mechanism, and seemed to seriously doubt whether I had a Mirror
hard drive at all. It was very bizarre, and the tech person was very
rude. I almost thought I'd called the wrong company :-(
This is particularly annoying since I wrote a favorable review of the
Mirror RM88 mechanism (on sumex in /info/hdwr/mirror-rm88-review.txt).
I daresay that had I known that Mirror's tech support would be so
poor, I would have mentioned it prominently in my review. The same
goes for the problems with the Media Manager software.

Latest ROM revision for the RasterOps 8L card is 1.45. RasterOps says that
all ROM versions from 1.3 (and higher) work with System 7; the versions
lower than 1.3 don't. Also, the up-to-date version of the RasterOps
Extension is 1.68. The extension is available for download in AppleLink,
Path: 3rdParty:RasterOps:ROME168
The ROM can be purchased from RasterOps at US$ 50. Order by sending an
AppleLink message to RASTERHELP. Note that they chose not to receive
email to their AppleLink address from the internet; such messages would
bounce back.
RasterOps Tech service is somewhere in Utah, but I've lost their phone
number. I'm sure if you call RasterOps at (408) 562-4200 (Santa Clara,
CA), they can give you the number.
I also noticed that the startup screens with the 8L card (in a IIci with
16 mB RAM) come b/w only, but I think it's because the card is accessed
only after the startup screen has been displayed. It's not a problem for
me; our company logo looks also great in black and white.

Then there are the freeware BBedit, which is now at version 2.2.2, and the

> with the problem?
1: - I've had this problem with Rodime drives - I think it's to do with the
non-Apple driver that's installed, or an incompatibility with the drives'
ROM.
The only answer I've found is to use another brand hard drive and use the
Rodimes as non-boot drives.
2: - This one's easy, there's a small mechanical switch at the front left of
the
FDHD mechanism which detects whether the disk is locked or not by reading the
state of the locking slider. If the disk is unlocked, the switch gets pressed
down when the disk is in, conversely the switch is not pressed when the disk
is
locked.
So - the problem is either the switch itself, which is fairly easy for a
competent electronics type to change, or in the adjustment of the disk holder
platform, or in the adjustment of the drive within the housing. In the latter
two cases, it's possible for the drive to work when the disk holder is not
quite
fully seated in the 'inserted' position, but the 'locked/unlocked' switch may
not work. It's also possible for the disk itself to get fouled up on the front
of the Mac case, which can have the same effect, and is fairly easy to adjust,
so long as you don't mind opening up your Mac.
Sorry about the long-winded answer to this one - hope it helps!
Cheers,
Richard

Subject: WORD 5.1/IICI PROBLEMS
Has anyone else seen this problem? If so, any suggestions?
MacIIci, 20Mb, Daystar PowerCache, System 7.1, Word 5.1A, 32 bit mode.
In 24 bit addressing, there is no problem. 32 bit mode exhibits the
following symptoms:
When we start Word, it loads the splash screen, puts up the menu bar, and
freezes. The whole system locks up. Cmd-Opt-Esc makes the cursor turn to
mishmash. The programmer's switch doesn't do ANYTHING. Reset is the only
option. We've tried reloading the System Files, reloading Word 5.1A from a
different set of master disks in the department, and nothing works. Older
versions of Word still work fine. Other applications (like Kaleidegraph
3.17 and other large, recent programs) work fine in 32 bit mode as well.
Please, I know how to check for INIT compatibility, so no FAQ answers about
removing INITs; I just want to know if you have seen this particular
problem before and if so how you solved it.
Thanks in advance!
